Ready-made cabinets can save money when standard sizes fit. Custom cabinets cost more because they are measured, built and installed for your room. Here's what the difference buys.

  • One price for your new cabinets, selected countertop and cabinet installation. Design, building, installation and your countertop are on one quote. A flat-pack kitchen adds assembly, installation, filler panels, replacement doors and a countertop, each priced separately.
  • Storage to every wall and the ceiling. Each cabinet is built to your measurements, so storage runs to your walls and ceiling with less wasted space and fewer filler panels than set cabinet sizes leave.
  • Built around your home. Your cabinet maker builds each cabinet around your walls, pipes and appliances, and the sink, faucet and accessories you choose. Settle them before building starts, because reworking a built cabinet to fit something new is billed as a change order.
  • Plywood where water reaches. You choose the material for each cabinet, such as plywood under your sink, where it tolerates moisture better than particle board or MDF.
  • The door you want. Laminate, painted or wood veneer, in the style and colour that suit your home, from modern flat-panel to traditional shaker.
  • One warranty on cabinets and installation. Your cabinet maker builds and installs your cabinets and backs both with a 5-year written warranty.

Do You Need New Cabinets, or Can You Keep What You Have?

When your cabinet boxes are solid and your layout works, painting or refacing them costs less. New cabinets make sense when yours are swollen from water, crumbling or sagging, or when the layout wastes space you need. See which option fits your kitchen.

Cabinet Price vs. Full Kitchen Renovation Cost

Your cabinet price covers your cabinets, countertop and their installation. A full kitchen renovation adds work by other trades, which you arrange and pay for separately.

What Could Change the Price After Your Home Visit?

Your online estimate prices the sizes and choices you enter. Your final quote prices the measurements your cabinet maker takes at your home visit and the choices you make there, so it can be higher or lower than your estimate.

After you sign your final quote, your price changes only through a written change order you sign before that work starts.

What can change your price, and when.

What changesHow it affects your price
Your room measures differently from the sizes you entered

Your final quote prices the measurements your cabinet maker takes, so your estimate changes before you sign. Your cabinet maker fixes its own measuring or building mistakes at no cost to you.

You choose a different material, door or countertop at your home visit

Your final quote prices the choice you make.

Material prices rise

Your price holds until the date your final quote states.

You change your design after you sign, such as a new sink, faucet or accessory, or after you see your cabinets in your room

A design change you ask for is priced in a written change order you sign before that work starts. Work that matches your approved design but looks different than you pictured is a design change. A cut countertop cannot be reused, so replacing one costs the price of a new countertop.

Installation uncovers a wall, plumbing or electrical problem, such as water damage behind your old cabinets or a wall too weak to hold a floating vanity

Your cabinet price stays the same. A licensed contractor, plumber or electrician you choose fixes the problem and charges you directly, at the price in their own quote.

Your plumbing is not where your approved design places your sink, dishwasher or vanity, such as water lines on an outside wall behind a floating vanity

Reworking built cabinets to fit the plumbing is priced in a written change order you sign before that work starts. If your plumbing is moving, book your measuring visit after your plumber has the new pipes in place, so your cabinets are built to fit them.

Plumbing, electrical and other renovation work

Outside your cabinet price. You hire and pay the plumber, electrician or contractor directly, at the price in their own quote.

Check your door style, colour, countertop and layout against your room before you approve your design. Your approved design is what your cabinet maker builds.

Why Two Kitchens the Same Size Can Have Different Prices

How each choice changes your price.

Your choiceHow it changes your price
Size

More linear feet means more cabinets, doors and installation time.

Cabinet material

Particle board costs the least, MDF a little more and plywood the most. Plywood is worth its price under a sink or anywhere else water reaches, and particle board lasts in a dry closet.

Doors and finishes

Laminate costs least. Painted and wood veneer doors cost more, in that order.

Drawers and organizers

Each drawer, pull-out and organizer adds parts and labour.

Countertop

Laminate costs least, then quartz, granite, porcelain, and marble or quartzite. See countertop prices.

Compare each material's benefits and trade-offs in the cabinet materials guide, and each pull-out and organizer in the cabinet accessories guide.

Countertop Prices

Your cabinet maker measures, supplies and installs your countertop with your cabinets, so one quote covers both. You can choose your countertop from the samples at its showroom.

An island top costs more per foot because it is deeper than a wall counter. Compare how each countertop wears in the cabinet materials guide.

What if My Cabinet Estimate Is More Than I Wanted to Spend?

Change the choices that cost the most before you give up storage you need.

  • Keep your existing layout. Your sink, stove and outlets stay where they are, so you avoid paying to move plumbing and wiring.
  • Replace only the cabinets that need it. Cabinets that are sound and still work for you can stay. Ask your cabinet maker at your home visit which of yours can stay.
  • Choose a simpler door finish. Laminate doors cost the least. Slab doors cost less than shaker doors in every finish.
  • Limit specialty organizers. Each pull-out and organizer adds parts and labour, so keep the ones you will use every day.
  • Choose a standard countertop. Laminate and quartz cost less than granite, porcelain, marble or quartzite.
  • Spend first on the areas you use every day. Put drawers and plywood around your sink, stove and main counter, and keep cabinets you use less simple.
  • Confirm your appliance models before your home visit. Your cabinets are then built once, to fit.

When Do You Pay for Custom Cabinets?

You never pay for work you can't see. The largest payment waits until your cabinets are in your home. You pay 40% when you place your order, 50% when your cabinets are delivered, and the remaining 10% after the final walkthrough, once everything on your list is fixed. Your final quote shows the amount due at each stage.

  1. You sign your final quote and pay your deposit. Your home visit and final quote are free, so nothing is due before you order. Your deposit buys the materials for your cabinets.
  2. Your cabinet maker builds your cabinets. Building takes about 6 to 8 weeks from the day you pay your deposit. See what can move your date. Your cabinets are built to your measurements, so they cannot be resold to anyone else.
  3. Your cabinets arrive, and you pay your second payment. It covers building them. Every cabinet box, door and drawer front is in your home before it is due.
  4. Your cabinet maker installs your cabinets and walks through the work with you. It fixes anything you list, then you pay your last payment.
Four steps from order to install, with a deposit at order, nothing due during building and 2 payments after delivery
Your deposit buys materials. The largest payment waits until your cabinets are in your home, and the last follows your walkthrough.

If you cancel your order, you owe none of the later payments. Your deposit isn't refunded once you order, because it buys materials cut for your room. Until you sign, you can stop at any time and owe nothing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are custom cabinets worth it over IKEA?

Yes, when standard sizes don't fit your room. Custom cabinets are sized for your walls and ceiling, with fewer filler panels, plywood where water reaches, one price for your cabinets, countertop and installation, and one warranty on the cabinets and their installation. A flat-pack kitchen costs less on the shelf, and you add assembly, installation, filler panels and a countertop. See your kitchen price and compare it with your flat-pack total.

Will my price go up after I order?

No. Your final quote sets your price. It lists each item on its own line, with installation included, and states the date its price holds until. After you sign, it changes only through a written change order you sign first. See what could change your price.

What if I pay a deposit and the cabinet maker disappears?

60% of your price waits until your cabinets are in your home. Your cabinet maker has built cabinets at its North York shop and showroom since 2001, and you can visit before you order. Every cabinet maker meets our standards, including liability insurance and written payment terms. See when each payment is due.

How does my quote become my final quote?

Your quote adds up the estimates you save, at Cabinet Pros prices. At your home visit, your cabinet maker takes the measurements to build your cabinets and talks through your options. Your final quote then prices the design and materials you choose, and sets your price.

Is installation included in the price?

Yes. Every Cabinet Pros price includes cabinet installation by the cabinet maker who builds your cabinets. Plumbing, electrical work and repairs to the surrounding room are separate.
