Custom Closets That Make Better Use of the Space You Already Have

One rod and one shelf leave the wall below your shirts and the space up to the ceiling empty. See what fitted shelves, drawers and hanging sections cost, installed, before anyone visits.

Use Every Inch of Your Closet

Reach-in closet with one wire shelf and rod, bare wall below the shirts and shoes piled on the floor
A single rod and shelf leaves the wall below short clothes empty, so shoes and bags pile up on the floor.

The wall above your clothes and the floor below them often sit empty. Your cabinet maker fills that space with shelves, drawers and hanging sections built to your closet's measurements. Your cabinet maker installs everything and backs it with a 5-year written warranty. See the standards every cabinet maker meets.

Best when

Your closet is a standard size and your budget is tight

You have a closet and want all of its space used

Your bedroom has no closet, or you want a full wall of storage

A 6 ft custom reach-in closet with laminate finishes costs about $1,900 to $2,800 CAD installed at October 2026 prices. Doors, more drawers, and lighting move the price toward the high end.

Plan the Layout Before You Pay for Upgrades

Check Your Closet Depth

Clothes on hangers need about 24 in. of depth, measured from the back wall to the inside of the closed door.

In a shallower closet, your cabinet maker can fit a pull-out rod that hangs clothes front to back, or plan shelves and drawers in place of a long rod.

Measure the inside depth and the room your doors need, so every rod, shelf and drawer fits and opens fully.

Keep Drawers Clear of the Doors

A drawer placed behind the wall beside the door opening cannot open fully.

Your cabinet maker places drawers inside the door opening and sets them back so their fronts and pulls clear the doors and trim. With sliding doors, each drawer needs a spot where a door can slide fully off it.

Choose Hanging Space or Shelves

Count what you hang and what you fold before you pick options.

Shirts and pants on hangers fit 2 rods stacked in one section, while dresses and coats need 1 full-height rod. See how much hanging space each type of clothing needs. Shelves cost less than drawers, so save drawers for what falls over on a shelf: socks, underwear and t-shirts.

Add lighting or a mirror once the layout fits what you own.

Materials

Shelf and Cabinet MaterialSelect the material for the shelves and cabinets.

Particle board costs the least and is fine in a dry closet. Trade-off: A long shelf can sag under stacked jeans or books.

Door StyleSelect the style of the doors and drawer fronts.

A flat door gives a clean, modern look and wipes clean in one pass. Trade-off: A flat face shows fingerprints and scratches, most of all in a dark or glossy colour.

Door FinishSelect the finish for the doors and drawer fronts.

Laminate wipes clean and resists chips and moisture at the lowest price. Trade-off: It comes in fewer colours and textures than paint or wood veneer, and a damaged door gets replaced rather than repaired.

Upgrades

Tick to add LED strip lights inside the closet.
Tick to add a full-length mirror on a closet door or side panel.

You see your whole outfit at the closet without giving up bedroom wall space. Trade-off: The mirror covers a panel you could otherwise use for hooks or a tie rack.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a custom closet cost in Toronto?

A 6 ft custom reach-in closet with laminate finishes costs about $1,900 to $2,800 CAD installed at October 2026 prices. Price your closet for a price based on your own size and choices.

Is the price on the estimator what I pay?

Not exactly. Your final quote sets your price. Your estimate includes installation and is in Canadian dollars. At your home visit, your cabinet maker measures your closet, and your final quote prices the design and materials you choose. See how your quote becomes your final quote.

Will my price go up after I order?

No. Your final quote sets your price and states the date it holds until. It changes only if you sign a written change order first. See what can change your price.

Is a custom closet worth it over IKEA PAX or a closet kit?

Not always. A ready-made kit suits a standard space on a tight budget. A custom system costs more but fits unusual dimensions, makes better use of corners and can be planned around what you actually store. Price your closet and compare it with your kit total.

Will particle board closet shelves sag?

A long one can, under books or stacked jeans. Particle board costs the least and lasts in a dry closet. For heavy loads, pick MDF or plywood in the estimator. Plywood holds screws and shelf supports best, and a long shelf may still need extra supports. Compare cabinet materials.

How long does a custom closet take?

About 6 to 8 weeks to build from the day you order, then about 1 day to install. See what can move your date.

Can you install drawers inside an existing closet?

Yes, where the space and design allow. Drawers fit into a custom system, usually with no changes to the surrounding room.

Can you build bedroom wardrobes?

Yes. Your cabinet maker builds built-in wardrobes and other bedroom storage cabinetry, then confirms the design and price after measuring your room. The estimator prices reach-in closet systems only.
